ICELT

Doing the Cambridge ESOL ICELT with ITI Istanbul

The ICELT (In-Service Certificate in English Language Teaching) is a comprehensive In-Service Teacher Development programme covering both the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching English. You can either attend the course at ITI or we can run the course at your institution. The course is designed to be flexible and meet the needs of teachers working in specific contexts which means the course content can be adapted to your student profile (pre-school through to adult learners) and the course dates and times can be arranged to fit in with your institution's timetable. The course can be run part-time over 8 -10 months or intensively in 4 week-long blocks.

The ICELT programme is an excellent way to raise the teaching knowledge and skills of the teachers in your department and is viewed as a benchmark of professional competence by employers.

In addition to the inherent benefits of developing professional competence and teaching skills as ELT practitioners, upon successful completion of the ICELT programme participants receive an internationally recognised teaching qualification certified by Cambridge ESOL.

Who is the ICELT for?

The ICELT is ideal for institutions that employ newly qualified teachers in their first three years of teaching. The ICELT can provide the professional support needed for inexperienced teachers.

The ICELT is also excellent preparation for teachers considering further future qualifications such as a DELTA or an MA, as the ICELT includes a language development component aimed at developing teachers' oral and written expression, as well as their confidence using ELT professional discourse.

The ICELT is also valuable for experienced teachers who have no previous formal EFL training such as the CELTA, and for teachers qualified in other disciplines who have no formal practical ELT qualifications. Finally, the ICELT is often of use to experienced EFL teachers who wish to further develop their pedagogic knowledge and skills.

The benefits for institutions that run an 'in-house' ICELT course can be seen immediately in the enthusiasm and motivation of teachers, not only on the course itself, but in the renewed interest and positive energy the course creates throughout the institution as a whole.

What does the course involve?

The course consists of 120 hours of supervision which is divided up as follows:

Coursework and teaching are internally assessed and externally moderated by Cambridge ESOL.

Candidates who successfully complete the course portfolio will be awarded a certificate from Cambridge ESOL at the levels of Distinction, Merit or Pass.

Who does the ICELT course ?

The ICELT course has evolved out of previous Cambridge ESOL courses (COTE, DOTE) and is now recognised internationally as a high quality INSET programme. The ICELT is not as widely known as the CELTA but is becoming increasingly popular with employers in Turkey.

The ICELT is a more appropriate qualification for working teachers in their first 4 years of teaching than CELTA which is designed as an introductory certificate for participants with no previous teaching experience.
