What is the course structure and content?
The University of Exeter is the only UK university to offer a face-to-face Summer Intensive MEd TESOL. The programme is aimed at teachers of all education levels hoping to further develop their TESOL training. A Masters in TESOL has international recognition and is seen as an important professional qualification worldwide to enable TESOL teachers to enhance their career prospects. In particular, it is often seen as an important entry qualification for educators who want to work at University level.
It is a three year programme. At the beginning of the first and second year you attend a one month intensive course during July in Exeter. Then you have the third year to write up your thesis which is based on a research study.
The programme provides you with a theoretical overview of key aspects of TESOL; an introduction to educational research; and an understanding of how to conduct research in the field of TESOL. It also allows you to specialise in optional modules of your choice and to enhance your opportunities for career progression.
What are the benefits for me?
A Masters in TESOL has international recognition and is seen as an important professional qualification worldwide to enable TESOL teachers to enhance their career prospects. In particular it is often seen as an important entry qualification for educators who want to work at University level.
Our MEd offers excellent preparation for progression to PhD or professional doctorate (EdD).
In addition, depending on the modules taken, completion of the MEd in TESOL can help you move into new areas within TESOL such as teacher education and training, English for special purposes, materials development and the teaching of English to young learners.
What do I need to apply?
Each application is considered on an individual basis to determine suitability. However, applicants are typically expected to have a first degree in language or education, a teaching qualification, and a minimum of two years full-time relevant teaching experience.
*Please note: If you are applying from overseas, you will only require a Short Term Study visa. For more information, please visit our Visa support section of the website.

Accreditation for Prior Learning (APL)
If you have previously completed a DELTA award at ITI, you can carry forward a maximum of 60-credits to the programme. This would mean a reduction in fees and it may also be possible to complete the taught part of the programme in one year rather than two. For further information about APL please contact Dr. Susan Riley at email@example.com.
Face-to-face support at ITI, Istanbul
We hold three meetings each year at ITI, Istanbul. These are an opportunity to discuss work and share experiences in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
ITI is also happy for participants to make their own arrangements to meet at our centre at other times, subject to space availability.
