Aston University Masters in TESOL
In November 2009, ITI hosted the first support group meeting for participants on the Aston University Distance Masters programme in TESOL/TESP/TEYL/EMT (see below). Tom Godfrey welcomed the group and Sally Hirst, tutor at ITI and a recent graduate from the programme, facilitated the meeting. All of us there enjoyed the group energy and found the exchange of information and ideas very helpful. Further meetings at ITI continue.
Support group meetings at ITI supplement Aston's range of on-line support systems, which include blackboard support and a student intranet which contains all the course materials and from which module materials may be downloaded.
There is a choice of programmes:
- MSc in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
- MSc in Teaching English for Specific Purposes (TESP)
- MSc in Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL)
- MSc in Educational Management in TESOL (EMT)
There is also a choice of modules, from which you must select four (three if you have been awarded credits for prior study):
- Course and Materials Design
- Teaching Young Learners
- Educational Management in TESOL
- Analysis of Spoken Interaction
- Analysis of Written Discourse
- Grammar and Lexis
All participants start with the Foundation Module, which is an introduction to the above modules, planning, self-study and research and a guide to academic writing.
Finally, there is a dissertation.
The course takes between 2 and 5 years to complete, depending on personal preferences, and can be taken entirely as a distance learner.
The total fee for the course is £6,950 (for all participants, UK, EU and non-EU)
Fee reductions are available for groups, and credits and fee reductions may be granted for Delta and previous work at masters level. Contact Ann Hazinedar for details.
Entry requirements are normally a first degree or a professional qualification (such as Delta or a Trinity College Diploma) and two years' teaching experience.
Non-native speakers of English need sufficient scores from TOEFL or IELTS or CPE taken within the last two years. Applicants with Delta or equivalent completed within the last five years, are exempted from this requirement.
Formal enrolment takes place twice a year, in April and October. Applications can be made at any time during the year, but preferably at least two months before your preferred enrolment date. If you would like further information please contact Ann Hazinedar.
